June 27thCollected our western red cedar from Concord Lumber and our marine plywood from the Woodery in Lunenburg, MA.
June 28thRipped stringers and cut frames with the help of a neighbor and his wood shop. Thanks Mr. J!

July 2ndOur first experience with lashing! Attached bow and stern stems to keel.

Top chines attached and frames in place. It is starting to look like a canoe!
July 5thInstalled middle chines, placed bottom chines.
July 6thAll six chines (three on either side) cut, beveled, and lashed to stems.

July 7th to 16thVacation in PA.
July 17thCut, beveled, laminated, and attached both gunwales.
July 18thBegan to square, lash, and secure frames to chines and gunwales.
July 19thFinished lashing all frames to the canoe.
July 20thTracing the stern breasthook.

July 21stReturned to Mr. J's woodshop to rip floorboards and cut spacer blocks.
July 22ndGlued and clamped spacer blocks in place.
July 23rdShaping slots for the floorboards.
July 24thFitted floorboards into their slots, and....
....installed starboard inwale.
July 25thintalled port inwale, and...
...began the sanding process.
July 26thAll sanding complete. Seats will be built and installed once we water test her and get a sense of best location for stability and comfort. Time to finally release her from the strongback : )

July 27thFirst coat of tung oil on the frame. Love how it brings out the grain and color of the wood
Final lashings of floorboards and keel complete.
July 28thThe traditional FOG (frame on grass) photo. Time to put the "skin" on her.
8 oz. polyester fabric draped over canoe frame.
Stapling fabric in place.
Trimming excess. A hot knife is very useful for this task.
Sewing fabric into place on the stern stem.
Spiral stitch on stern stem. Note ironing of the skin to shrink it to the frame.
